Ebenezer means “rock of hope” the woman behind the centre is Mama Shirley Merime. The centre cares for 66 children and 77 senior citizens and has been running for more than 13 years. Mama Shirley is affectionately known as ‘Mother Teresa’ by the residents as she truly believes that the needs of others are more important than her own.

Sustainable skills training:

Entrepreneurial Bakery
They are the first to have received a fully equipped “entrepreneurial” bakery, which is supported by 4 surrounding informal settlements. They bake up to 100 loaves a day and 80 rolls. They are also providing their community with affordable decorated birthday, christining and wedding cakes. Regular training is given to young unemployed members of the surrounding informal settlements.

Cooking & baking
This skill has added great value to their kitchen which feeds the residents as well as assisted when they cater for various local functions.

Food gardens
Homegrown produce is used to feed the 140 members residing at the centre.

Crocheting
Empowered 4 members of the centre and has produced 1400 units to date – sells at an average of R120 per unit.

Siyabonga Bread oven
This assists and adds value to their already busy bakery and creates additional jobs for members/residents.
